2008 - 2009 WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMINATIONS

Deadline to register for both written and oral exams are one month ahead of exam date.

Please register for both the written and oral exams when you send in your registration form. This helps us in planning and scheduling the exams.

Important Note: The AFCI written examination is held at scheduled times and in pre-determined locations. There are absolutely no exceptions made for writing at alternate times or locations.

 

WRITTEN EXAMINATIONS: will be held simultaneously on the following days:

  • Saturday, May 31, 1008 Deadline: April 29, 2008
  • Saturday, January 17, 2009 Deadline: December 17, 2008

ORAL EXAMINATION: Candidates who have successfully completed the written examination will be eligible to sit the Oral Examination. Please register for both the written and oral exam when you send in your registration form.

DATES OF THE ORAL EXAMS ARE:

  • Saturday & Sunday, April 5 & 6, 2008 - Toronto, ON (only if 13 people register) Deadline: December 19, 2007
  • Saturday, Sunday & Monday, September 13, 14 & 15, 2008 - Toronto, ON (only if 13 people register) Deadline: April 29, 2008
  • Saturday & Sunday, November 1 & 2, 2008 - Calgary, AB (only if 13 people register) Deadline: April 29, 2008

ELIGIBILITY: Members in good standing with their licensing bodies, who are paid up members of AFCI and have completed Level 1, Parts 1, 2A and 3A of the AFCI curriculum. For those who have not completed their training through AFCI, submit documentation with a minimum of 150 credit hours from another approved training program, approved by the AFCI Education Committee. An assessment will be made on an individual basis.

AFCI Exam Policy: Candidates who have passed both the written and oral portions of the examination are awarded the Certificate of the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute and are entitled to use the designation "CAFCI" after their names.

AFCI Policy re Written Exam: Passing mark is 75%. Failure of the written exam twice will disqualify the candidate from writing the exam a third time. A refund cheque for the Oral portion will be sent to unsuccessful candidates of the written exam.

AFCI Policy re Oral Exam: Eligibility requires passing the written exam with 75%. Passing mark for the oral exam is 75%. Failure of the oral portion of the exam may be followed by one more attempt at the oral (after at least three months waiting period) without repeating the written exam. Failure of the oral on the third attempt (following success on the written exam a second time) disqualifies the candidate permanently.

Please Note - Oral Exams:
For oral examinations, three examiners are at all times required as well as a minimum of 13 students registered for a scheduled location.

If an oral exam is scheduled where there are no courses taking place, a minimum of 13 students must be registered for the exam or it will be cancelled, unless those who have registered are willing to pay the extra costs involved to cover the administrative expenses, travelling, hotel costs and fees for the examiners.

Privately run oral exams can be scheduled through your Chapters, if there are 13 students and the students are willing to pay a higher fee to cover expenses. Contact your Chapter President, who will make these special arrangements with the AFCI office.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellation refund is subject to a $25.00 charge.

Illness: A student who becomes ill and is therefore unable to attend all or part of a course is required to forward a note from his/her physician within 48 hours following the course in which he/she was registered.

Transfer: Should a student be unable to attend and wish to transfer to an upcoming exam there is no transfer fee providing it is a first-time transfer. Notice must be given in writing to AFCI at least 3 days prior to the exam. However, for each and any subsequent transfer, there will be an administrative fee of $25.00. Transfers are only applicable within a two-year time span.

Membership Fees must be paid up, before taking the exams.

No Show at the Written Exam or Oral Exam - no refund.

 

GUIDELINES FOR ACUPUNCTURE EXAMINATION

OBJECTIVES:

  • To examine the candidate's knowledge as taught in the AFCI Level 1, Parts 1, 2A
    and 3A curriculum.
  • To ensure safety to practice.

 

FORMAT

1. WRITTEN EXAMINATION
· Duration 2 1/2 hours
· Passing grade 75%.

A) All questions will be multiple choice or fill in the blanks. The questions are all taken from the videotape and/or written materials of Level 1, Parts 1, 2A and 3A. They will be based on the following:

· Introduction to the history of acupuncture, the Philosophy of Chinese Medicine embracing the five elements, the Yin and Yang Principle, and the Meridians
· Neurophysiological neurohormonal mechanism for action of acupuncture
· Physiology of pain, anatomy of acupuncture points, and gross anatomy relative to needle insertion
· The hazards and complications of acupuncture therapy
· Electric stimulators used for acupuncture therapy and use of TENS, Codetron, etc.
· The clinical application, methods and techniques used in acupuncture
indications, limitations, and adverse effects and evaluation of outcome.

B) One essay type question.

2. ORAL EXAMINATION:
The participants who have successfully passed the written exam are eligible to sit the oral exam.

Each candidate is examined for 35 minutes by three examiners.
Emphasis will be placed on the candidate's approach to the patient, not just his/her
knowledge of acupuncture.
Candidates are rated by each examiner in five areas:
1) Clinical Approach (case scenario to determine safety)
2) Treatment Approach (acupuncture treatment of conditions)
3) Safety of Practice
4) Point Location and Meridian Description
5) Needling Technique

Note: There is an automatic failure of the oral examination if the candidate demonstrates a needle direction which would be fatal to the patient; a direction or depth of needle penetration which would perforate an organ; or if the shaft of the needle is contaminated prior to insertion.
