    MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE

    ACUPUNCTURE FOUNDATION OF CANADA INSTITUTE 

    This nine part program may be completed over a period of one to three-years

    Two levels of  continuing education courses open exclusively to AFCI members ( except Part 1, Level 1, which is open to non-members) who are licensed Physicians, Physiotherapists, Dentists, Chiropractors, Naturopathic Doctors, Registered Nurses (Baccalaureate) and Licensed Acupuncturists. The courses incorporate both anatomical and classical acupuncture.

LEVEL I (Introductory Level)

Level I Certification (CAFCI) 
In order to be certified by the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute and to obtain the CAFCI designation, one takes a written and oral exam upon completion of the Level I courses (Parts 1, 2A & 3A). The successful candidate is awarded the CAFCI designation. (Note: The CAFCI designation is a requirement to include acupuncture in professional practices in some provinces: check with your licensing board or College).

Part 1: 30 AFCI Credit Hours - View the Fees Structure
Register at least 3 weeks before the course to obtain and study the videotapes + manual

  • Introduction to basic concepts of Anatomical and Classical Acupuncture
  • Hazards and complications, precautions of needling
  • Location and needling of 20 important acupoints
  • Includes distance education videos and written materials to be studied prior to class
  • In class: 2 days of case presentations and practical workshops

Competency: participants may start simple treatment of acute and chronic pain problems (with an emphasis on musculoskeletal pain) within their scopes of practice.

Parts 2A & 3A: 60 AFCI Credit Hours - View the Fees Structure
Note:
Must be taken after Part 1. AFCI Membership is a requirement. Parts 2A or 3A may be taken separately and are credited 30 AFCI credit hours each.

  • Location/needling of major points on head, neck, upper limb (Part 2A), and back, abdomen, lower limb (Part 3A)
  • Integration of acupoints into treatment of facial pain, frozen shoulder, tennis/golfer’s elbow, back, hip, knee, ankle and foot pain
  • Electroacupuncture, TENS and Codetron™
  • Management of Cancer Pain
  • Includes 12 hours (2A) and 13 hours (3A), videos and written materials to be studied prior to class
  • In class 2 days for Part 2A, followed by 2 days for Part 3A: case presentations and practical workshops

Competency Part 2A: participants will be capable of using acupuncture in the management of facial pain and headaches, myofascial pain syndrome and radiculpoathy of the neck and upper limb.
Competency Part 3A: participants will be capable of using electroacupuncture, TENS and Codetron™, for the treatment of pain, cancer pain, myofascial pain of the back, abdomen and the lower limb.

ACCREDITATION:  STUDY CREDITS FOR LEVEL I:
MAINPRO-M1

  • This program meets the accreditation criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been been accredited for 12 MAINPRO-M1 credits for Part 1, 12 MAINPRO-M1 credits for Part 2A and 12 MAINPRO-M1 credits for Part 3A.
  • Members of the American Academy of Family Physicians are eligible to receive 12 Prescribed hours for attendance at Part 1, 12 Prescribed hours for Part 2A and 12 Prescribed hours for Part 3A, due to reciprocal agreement with the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
  • AFCI study credits for Part 1: 30 hours. AFCI study credits for Part 2A: 30 hours. AFCI study credits for Part 3A: 30 hours.

MAINPRO-M2

  • A Physician may claim only those hours of credit that he/she has spent in the educational activity for MAINPRO-M2 study credits to the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

LEVEL II Integrated Classical and Anatomical Acupuncture

Advanced Acupuncture For Neurological Conditions

  • Part 2B: Distance Learning Component (videotapes/syllabus) + 2 days in class

  • Part 3B: Distance Learning Component (videotapes/syllabus) + 2 days in class
    Parts 2B and 3B in-class sessions will be presented consecutively over four days allowing students the choice of attending one or both at the same time, to reduce travel costs

Part 2B: 30 AFCI Credit Hours - View the Fees Structure

Note: Must be taken after Parts 1 and 2A but may be taken before parts 3A & 3B.

Videotapes and syllabus to be viewed/studied prior to 2 days in class for hands-on point location/needling, treatment planning and case presentations.
Location and needling of 79 advanced level acupoints on the head/neck/upper extremity. Introduction to scalp acupuncture. Integration of acupoints into treatment of conditions involving brain (stroke, Alzheimer's, cerebral palsy, closed head injury, Parkinson's disease) and cranial nerves (anosmia, macular degeneration, Bell's Palsy, facial tic, deafness, tinnitus, dysrthria, etc.). Management of movement disorders, thoracic outlet syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, "de Quervain'' tenosynovitis, etc.

Competency:
Participants will be capable of using acupuncture as an adjunct in the management of central nervous system disorders, and some neurological problems including cranial nerves and upper extremity entrapment syndromes, within their scopes of practice.

Part 3B: 30 AFCI Credit Hours - View the Fees Structure

Note: Must be taken after Parts 1 and 3A, but may be taken before Parts 2A & 2B.

Videotapes and syllabus to be viewed/studied prior to 2 days in class for hands-on point location/needling, treatment planning and case presentations.
Location and needling of 101 advanced level points on the back/abdomen/lower extremity. Integration of acupoints into treatment of autonomic nervous system dysfunction pain syndromes (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or Complex Regional Pain Syndrome), Raynaud's, etc. Use of acupuncture in management of multiple sclerosis, spasticity, management of deafferentation pain and spinal cord injury pain, post herpetic neuralgia, peripheral neuropathy, Restless Legs Syndrome, entrapment syndromes, peripheral vascular disease, perineal pain and bladder dysfunction.

Competency: Participants will be capable of using acupuncture as an adjunct in the management of autonomic nervous system dysfunction, pain syndromes, and some neurological conditions listed above, within their scopes of practice.

 

Classical Acupuncture Compenent

Courses must be taken in the order listed.

Classical A - Basics of Traditional Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (BTAOM) - Introduction to Classical Acupuncutre: 30 AFCI Credit Hours - View the Fees Structure

Note: Must be taken after Part 1; completion of Parts 2A and 3A is recommended

Videotaped lectures and syllabus introducing the basic foundations of Traditional Chinese Medicine must be reviewed prior to attending in class sessions.  Two-day in class sessiosn of practical workshops and clinical case studies.

Competency: Participants should be capable of making a basic TCM diagnosis based on Yin/Yang Energy balance, Five Elements Theory, Zang/Fu organs physiopathology, Four Elements, tongue and pulse diagnosis and the Eight Patterns.

Classical C+D - Jing Luo Energetics for Pain (JLEP): 45 AFCI Credit Hours - View the Fees Structure

COMPLETION OF LEVEL I, PART 1 AND LEVEL II, CLASSICAL A - BTAOM MANDATORY. LEVEL I, PARTS 2A AND 3A ARE RECOMMENDED.

Videotaped lectures, syllabus and Atlas of Chinese Acupuncture must be viewed/studied prior to 3 days in-class sessions for clinical case studies. 

Competency: Understanding and use of Meridian Energetics for the treatment of pain due to orthopedic, sports and musculoskeletal conditions. Introduces the Tendino-Muscular Meridians, Divergent Meridians, Luo Channels and Eight Extraordinary Vessels. (Note: For those students who have already taken either Classical C or D, a proportional price reduction will be offered as it is not possible to split material into 2 separate sessions. Please contact the AFCI office for details.)

Classical B - Pathology and Treatment of Zang-Fu Organs (PTZFO): 30 AFCI Credit Hours - View the Fees Structure

COMPLETION OF LEVEL I, PART 1 AND LEVEL II, CLASSICAL A - BTAOM AND CLASSICAL C + D - JLEP MANDATORY. 

Videotaped lectures and syllabus must be viewed/studied prior to 2 days in-class sessions for clinical case studies. Introduces TCM etiopathology of the Zang-Fu organs, treatment of Respiratory (asthma, rhinitis), GI (chronic diarrhea, constipation - colitis, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel, etc.) and GU (PMS, dysmenorrhea, impotence, infertility, urinary incontinence) system disorders. 

Competency: Participants will be capable of using the TCM paradigm for the treatment of internal medical disorders within their scopes of practice.

Classical E - Bi Syndromes and Febrile Diseases (BSFD): 30 AFCI Credit Hours - View the Fees Structure

COMPLETION OF LEVEL I, PART 1 AND LEVEL II, CLASSICAL A - BTAOM AND CLASSICAL C + D - JLEP MANDATORY. 

Videotaped lectures and syllabus must be viewed/studied prior to 2 days in-class sessions for clinical case studies. Introduces the treatment of headaches (myofascial and migraines), the 6 Meridian Levels and their syndromes, the Four Stages and the Triple Warmer Syndrome. The Bi Syndromes and their treatment using the Five Shu points are presented extensively for the treatment of arthritic disorders. 

Competency: Participants will be capable of treating headaches (myofascial and migraines) and painful inflammatory rheumatic arthritic disorders.

ACCREDITATION:  STUDY CREDITS FOR LEVEL II:

  • This program meets the accreditation criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been accredited for 12 MAINPRO-M1 credits for Part 2B; 12 for Part 3B; 12 for Classical A - BTAOM; 19 for Classical C+D - JLEP; 12 for Classical B - PTZFO and 13 for Classical E - BSFD.
  • Members of the American Academy of Family Physicians are eligible to receive up to 12 Prescribed hours for attendance at Part 2B, 12 for Part 3B, 12 for Classical A - BTAOM, 19 for Classical C+D - JLEP, 12 for Classical B - PTZFO and 13 for Classical E - BSFD, due to reciprocal agreement with the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
  • MAINPRO-M2 CREDITS Members of the College of Family Physicians of Canada may report Mainpro-M2 credits for the unaccredited portion of this program (viewing videos/DVDs).
  • AFCI study credits for Part 2B: 30 hours; Part 3B: 30 hours; Classical A - BTAOM: 30 hours; Classical C+D - JLEP: 45 hours; Classical B - PTZFO: 30 hours; Classical E - BSFD: 30 hours.

AFCI Membership:  Membership in the AFCI is open to licensed MDs, DDSs, PTs, DCs, NDs, RNs (baccalaureate), and licenced acupuncturists.  To attend courses beyond Part 1, one must be a member of AFCI.


AFCI Examinations

Level 1 examination may be challenged after Parts 1, 2A, and 3A or AFCI-approved equivalent training. AFCI Level 1 Certification (CAFCI) is a requirement to include acupuncture in some provinces. Please check with your licensing board.
