Dr. Joseph Wong, MD, FRCPC
The Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute's Anatomical Acupuncture Curriculum is based on the teachings of Dr. Joseph Wong, Chief Lecturer for the AFCI from 1975-2001. A western-trained physician with a Royal College specialty in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dr. Wong's contribution to the understanding of acupuncture in relation to the anatomy and physiology of the human body is immeasurable. We owe him a huge debt of gratitude for making anatomical acupuncture the core of the teachings of AFCI.
Not only has Dr. Wong analyzed the anatomy of each acupuncture point to determine which nerves and other tissues are stimulated by its use; he has worked out a way of using acupuncture points to have effects on specific muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and soft tissues. His understanding of the way in which the nervous system is affected by acupuncture is profound. For example, his coining of the terms 'Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Switches" to describe acupoints that balance the Autonomic Nervous System has given us powerful tools that can be taught to students who are trained in western medicine.
Dr. Wong has been a patient and kind teacher to many at AFCI. His gentle techniques as well as his one-needle objective reassessment method have been adopted by many of his colleagues and students. Dr. Wong's unique blending of basic TCM concepts along with anatomical acupuncture enhances outcomes one achieves when treating major acute and chronic pain problems.
In 1993, Dr. Wong received the Clifford G. Woolfe Lecturer Award from AFC in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Medical Acupuncture Education. Dr. Wong has lectured around the world, and received an Honorary Doctorate from the Open International University of Complementary Medicine, as well as the “World Famous Doctor Award”, and the “Golden Ox Award” from the World Peace Foundation of the United Nations. Upon his retirement from AFCI, the Joseph S.Y. Wong Scholarship was established to honour his many contributions.
Dr. Wong has contributed greatly to the evolution of Medical Acupuncture. His publications include a series of Manuals of Neuro-Anatomical Acupuncture, which present a practical wisdom to health practitioners, coming from his years of development of an integration of eastern and western medicine.
AFCI is delighted to have this opportunity to have Dr. Wong lecture again at this year’s Special Seminar.
Enrich your acupuncture experience and knowledge for the benefit of your patients.
