AFCI offers a Continuing Education Acupuncture Program which effectively incorporates both anatomical and classical acupuncture approaches. The curriculum of this Program began a process of revision in 2009, beginning with the Level One courses. While the foundational content of the program remains the same, there are exciting updates that will enhance the learning experience for students. Updated information will be posted here as it is finalized.
AFCI now offers a 100 hour certificate, Certificate of Anatomical Acupuncture, to regulated health professionals. Graduates of this Certificate will feel proficient in performing simple, yet highly effective, needle insertions, using specific and important acupuncture points, thereby expanding their clinical practice. Successful completion of this Certificate awards the CAFCI designation.
Upon completion of the first Certificate, students will be eligible to take the Advanced Certificate of Acupuncture. These additional courses offer the study of more acupuncture points, opening doors for treating more conditions, with an emphasis on neurological pathologies. The Advanced Certificate also includes training in the basics of Classical Acupuncture.
In 2011, the courses of this certificate will replace 2B/3B and BTAOM. Again, course content will be much the same, with changes in organization, format and presentation.
Completion of this Advanced Certificate provides eligibility to take the AFCI Classical Acupuncture courses. Deepening in understanding and skills in the Classical approach to acupuncture assessment and treatment, with a particular emphasis on musculoskeletal and orthopedic injuries, will further contribute to health practitioners' capacity to offer acupuncture as an adjunct therapy in clinical practice.
AFCI will be offering a full 300 hours of training
to meet your professional development and regulatory needs and timing.
Physicians, dentists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, TCM doctors, TCM practitioners, baccalaureate level registered nurses, naturopathic doctors and occupational therapists are eligible to take this training program.

New Course Format
The AFCI curriculum has been carefully designed to incorporate distance learning components along with “hands on” practical onsite sessions. While distance education components have always been part of the AFCI course packages, the new format provides a “blended learning” or “hybrid” training environment that incorporates the best of web-supported independent home study along with onsite interaction with experts and colleagues. We think you will find the learning process engaging and constructed for success!
Home Study Units
The first unit of study in each course of our enhanced training program is a home study unit, and is to be completed prior to attending the first onsite session. Students should plan to take a minimum of 6 weeks of 4 hours per week to complete the home study units. We recommend working through the material on your own time, until you have achieved an 80% pass on the integrated quizzes.
A package of materials will be mailed to you when you register for your course, anytime between 3 months and 6 weeks prior to the onsite class date. Registration deadlines are 6 weeks prior to each onsite session. Your package will include a course manual, a DVD resource, and access to your course website with a weekly guide to step you through your studies.
The home study units must be completed prior to attending the onsite sessions.
Onsite Sessions
The 3-day seminars will provide a balance of lecture, case work and small group supervised practice. You will learn how to solve practical problems with acupuncture, how to develop an acupuncture treatment plan, how to precisely locate acupuncture points, and stimulate those points with needles and/or electroacupuncture. The case-based instruction sessions will be led by expert lecturers, and consist of demonstrations as well as student problem-solving. During these sessions you will learn how to assess a patient for suitability for acupuncture treatment, formulate treatment plans, and how to monitor the patient for response to treatment.
In the practical small group workshops, students work in groups of 8 students per facilitator to learn acupuncture point location, precise needling techniques for each point, and safety precautions. Facilitators spend time with each student ensuring their proficiency. All needles and supplies are provided at the course. Students locate and needle acupoints on each other with single-use sterile disposable needles.
